What a b-lousy situation

Labels: , ,

Priyanka Chopra may be high on fashion these days, but the actress recently faced a wardrobe crisis in Abu Dhabi, UAE recently.

Says Priyanka, “I was in Abu Dhabi for the opening ceremony of the Middle East International Film Festival. Since I was representing India, I wanted to be seen in a sari,” But unfortunately for Priyanka, the blouse that went with the sari just wouldn’t fit her.

And true to her celebrity status, Priyanka did throw a royal fit once she returned to India. She gave her designer a major dressing down and even threatened to never work with him ever again.

Unlike most actresses, Priyanka doesn’t deny the incident. She says, “The blouse wouldn’t fit properly. But fortunately for me, I always carry a back-up. So I ended up wearing another dress instead of the sari. I feel sad that I couldn’t wear the sari because my sari-clad look in Dostana has been liked by many.

Priyanka’s sari in the song Desi girl from her upcoming film Dostana has been much talked about. Reveals Priyanka, “That sari is a Manish Malhotra creation. It’s a grey and silver sari.”

About her intimate scenes with Arjan Bajwa in Fashion, Priyanka says, “There are love scenes, but nothing so sensational. As for the film getting an A certificate, Life... In A Metro and Race got an A certificate too and they did well. As for me, well, this is my first ‘Adults’ film. After children’s films like Krrish and Drona I needed that! Fashion has some really intense scenes of drug abuse. Fashion is not kid stuff.”

Making Priyanka Chopra look hot in 'Fashion'

Labels: , , ,

A lot of thought went into the styling of actress Priyanka Chopra in Madhur Bhandarkar’s upcoming film Fashion .

Priyanka’s character in the film is that of a small-town girl who comes to Mumbai to become a supermodel. Her character undergoes change from a gaudily dressed girl from Chandigarh to a budding model with a sophisticated fashion sense. Then, her character goes through personal crisis. For these sequences, she was given a neglected look. And finally, she overcomes her demons and emerges a supermodel.

Rita Dhody, Priyanka’s stylist in the film gave her as many as five different looks in keeping with the character throughout the course of the story.

"Initially, she (Priyanka) is shown as a very hep character with loud colours - everything is matching in her attire from the lipstick to nail polish to even her shoes. It's a very look-at-me look," Rita is quoted by a news agency.

"But when the first change occurs, the colour palette begins to change. Her make-up becomes light. Then, when she becomes a model and a supermodel, the contrasting change is very visible. When she starts losing it all, she becomes very edgy - everything from the colour palette to the make-up becomes softer to show she doesn't care any more about her looks before her resurrection takes place," says the stylist.

Rita, however, goes on to add that the changes in the styling of Priyanka’s character have been done in a seamless, subtle manner.

‘Fashion’ is Madhur Bhandarkar ’s attempt to expose the hidden face of the fashion industry. The movie also stars Kangana Ranaut , Mugdha Godse , Arjan Bajwa , Arbaaz Khan and Kitu Gidwani.

The film is set to release on October 29.

Priyanka's look in 'Fashion' goes through five phases

Labels: , , ,

Priyanka Chopra's look in filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar's much-awaited "Fashion" goes through five subtle but distinct phases, tracing her journey from Chandigarh to a top model in Mumbai.

"We followed the journey of Priyanka's character Meghna Mathur from the time she comes to Mumbai from Chandigarh to become a supermodel in five phases. It's a very natural, subtle progression," said Rita Dhody, who has done the styling for the movie, which is a take on India's fashion fraternity.

"Initially, she is shown as a very hep character with loud colours - everything is matching in her attire from the lipstick to nail polish to even her shoes. It's a very look-at-me look," Rita said, explaining Priyanka's character in 'Fashion'.

"But when the first change occurs, the colour palette begins to change - her make-up becomes light. Then, when she becomes a model and a supermodel, the contrasting change is very visible. When she starts losing it all, she becomes very edgy - everything from the colour palette to the make-up becomes softer to show she doesn't care any more about her looks before her resurrection takes place," the stylist told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.

Releasing Oct 29, 'Fashion' also stars Kangana Ranaut, debutante Mugdha Godse, Arbaaz Khan, Arjan Bajwa and many of the who's who of the fashion industry.

Rita, who runs a company, Ananda, which works on the embroidery silhouettes of international brands like Armani and Chanel, said the actors' look in the film is based on a classic approach on contemporary fashion and not any existing trend.

"It is very contemporary and a very much today's look, but my idea was to streamline and take it to the classic side than making it trend-based," she said.

Rita revealed that the styling for Kangana's character in 'Fashion' would make "audiences feel sorry for her".

"The movie begins with Kangana's look as a supermodel. She is very thin so we gave her short dresses with low necklines that wouldn't look vulgar as we wanted the image to stick to people's minds that she is a supermodel who is very comfortable with her body," she explained.

"We also used Kangana's hair in an exotic manner. We cut it short but kept her mop of curls to make her look more vulnerable when she loses it all. During that phase, she is also shown sporting long t-shirts that would make audiences feel sorry for her," Rita said.

Debutante Mugdha Godse, who plays a failed model, sports a great look.

"Mughda's look in the film is a fusion of rock and a grunge to give her the survivor look as a B-grade model who would do anything before we clean it up, making her more chic and glamorous. We gave her a little bikini top and a t-shirt slashed up like a choli (blouse). She also sports a pair of chains and ankle boots," she said.

"She's got a very tiny waist so we tried showing it. We gave her really low-waist trousers and a beautiful tattoo on the side of her hipbone. Her hair was cut short and infused with a strong essence of red in it," she added.

This is the first time Rita has done the styling for a film and she admits it wasn't an easy job.

"A lot of detailing went into the film from jewellery, clothes, colour, accessories to nail polish. We had to make sure that everything was in sync with the frame and complemented each other and for that we even worked on the junior artists. We wanted to make it look very authentic and real.

"We didn't try to sensationalise it by making it more bling or costume-based. I had to restrain myself from going overboard as Madhur can't take over the styling and there were huge time and budget constraints,{rsquo}{rsquo} said Rita, who has helped in positioning and building global brands like Dolce & Gabbana (D&G), Chloe, Stella McCartney and Fendi in India.

"We had 11 character-based ramp shows in the film as part of the story line that were very much thought about. There is also a lot of jeans and shirt that have been used in the movie to show the models in real life,{rsquo}{rsquo} she added.

Rita confessed that she is exhausted with her maiden venture and plans to "refresh" herself before signing on another project.

More than 100 models are walking the ramp in the fashion weeks in Delhi. But one supermodel is missing — Meghna Mathur of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion. Otherwise known to admiring millions as Priyanka Chopra. While some sources claim that Bhandarkar is wary of facing the fashion fraternity, the reality is different: the lead actresses are walking the ramp at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, starting on October 21.

“Kangana [Ranaut], Mughda [Godse] and I are walking the ramp for Narendra Kumar Ahmed, in LFW,” confirms Priyanka. Ahmed, along with Rita Dhody, has styled the film’s look. She will, however, promote the film in Delhi later. Fashion is perceived to be a sensational take on the glamour industry. However, Bhandarkar has tried assuaging fears that it shows the industry in a bad light. Priyanka has corroborated this.
“There’s no hidden agenda in Fashion. It’s no big exposé. It’s an emotional tale and the story of three girls — very endearing. It shows female bonding in a beautiful way, something not shown in film industry for long,” the actress said, speaking exclusively to HT City during a recent visit here to promote the Nokia Supernova. Recently, the film was in news for getting an A certificate. It shows the reality of the life of models — from models snorting cocaine to a gay designer, Fashion shows it all. “The film showcases reality, but nothing in the film has been sensationalised or glorified,” said Priyanka.
Gay cool

After Fashion, she will be seen in Dostana, in which Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham pretend to be gay. About the actors’ off-camera bonding, she said, “They would call each other baba. Baba gym chalein, ‘Baba, let’s go there’.” Her opinion on gay issues is clear: “I am all for gay rights and pride. We live in democratic society. To each his own.
We have cultures and tradition, but we also value our individuality. It’s about being, and letting the people be.” Priyanka has seen the gay world up close. “My best friend in the US was gay. His name was Sam, and he called himself Samantha. He was great guy. I had to go to the prom, and couldn’t afford a dress. So, I borrowed his drag dress and shoes. It was a lovely dress and the best shoes I’ve ever worn.”

CENSORS, MODELS OBJECT TO MADHUR'S `FASHION`

Labels: ,

Madhur Bhandarkar is a popular director who has given us a number of films like 'Page 3', 'Chandni Bar' and 'Corprate that have hit the box office. However, the National Film Awardee director is a bit upset that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given his next film 'Fashion' an "adults-only" certificate. Though he didn't expect a 'U' certificate, but he was sure to get a U/A certificate. This is to recall that Bhandarkar, who has co-produced the film with UTV Motion Pictures, describes 'Fashion' as his most glamorous film. That's why he has cast Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut, Arjan Bajwa and Mugdha Godse for the lead roles. While, the Censor Board had asked director Bhandarkar to delete from the film some six scenes including Priyanka and Arjan's lovemaking as well as and Priyanka and Kangana's dragging at drugs! Not only that, even the models engaged in the fashion industry say that while Madhur's earlier movies were based on real life situations, his 'Fashion' has dished out a cocktail of fact and fiction.

Since the director refused to delete the scenes objected to by the censor, the board has given 'Fashion' an 'A' certificate. The board didn't accept the director's explanation that these scenes are an integral part of the movie and that yanking those off would mean compromising with the realistic depiction of the movie's subject. Madhur Bhandarkar says that he didn't accede to the deletions of concerned scenes, and preferred to let it be for "adults only" and announced to release it on October 29, this year, all over India. Director Madhur Bhandarkar's attempt to probe the dark side of the style industry in his upcoming movie "Fashion" has fashionistas worried that it might generate negative vibes about the industry.

Many in the fashion fraternity also object to the movie's tagline, "In the world of fashion, you will have to give up more than just your morals". The industry adds that the movie will send out the wrong signals by generating negative vibes about the industry like the models believing that their life is all about partying, looking good and taking drugs, which is not true. Also, the tagline, according to the fashion industry, degrades their work. They are afraid that after the release of the movie, they will have to be answerable to their families, friends and other people by fielding questions that just don't exist. Significantly, 'Fashion' releases Oct 29, just 10 days after the conclusion of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, so the memories of that event are sure to be fresh in the minds of many of those who view the movie.

Amruta Patki, Miss India Earth 2006, says that Bhandarkar had made a name for himself with movies 'Page 3' was a real good movie and all of us could relate to it. But somehow this time, his movie is based on just superficial observations. It may be a combination of some facts and fiction, she adds. Model Vipassa Aggarwal - the current face of cosmetic brand Lakme - maintained that all those in the fashion industry worked with dignity and led perfectly normal lives! Incidentally, 'Fashion' stars Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Arbaaz Khan. Model Mugdha Godse makes her big screen debut with the film, which also has Arjan Bajwa and many members of the fashion industry as part of its cast. Let's therefore keep our fingers cross until we watch the movie.
